Goa: Fifty-six people succumbed to Covid-19 during the first week of September, making it the deadliest seven days for Goa till date. An average of eight Covid-19 deaths were reported each day during this period, the highest since the first Covid-19 fatality was reported in the state on June 22.
“We are on a peak,” state epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar said, explaining that the deaths are proportionate to the spike in the number of positive cases the state is presently witnessing. “Fatalities will continue even during the initial downturn (of the peak),” he told.
56 deaths reported at the start of the month, 42 took place at the GMC, Bambolim, and nine at the ESI covid hospital in Margao. Five patients were declared ‘brought dead’. Around half the deceased were in their 60s and 70s. Ten patients were in their 50s, eight in their 40s and five each in their 30s and 80s.
