Curtorim MLA written to CM urging to take action

GOA: Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Laurenco has written to chief minister Pramod Sawant urging him to take action against illegal sand mining in Curtorim. Pointing out that roads were getting damaged due to overloaded trucks, Laurenco said, “Large scale sand mining has led to the collapse of many bunds (embankment or causeway) which in turn is leading to flooding of agricultural fields and destruction of agriculture.”

“In-stream mining is detrimental for Zuari river as it does not conform to the guidelines prepared by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) that the depth of mining in the river bed should not exceed three meters or the water level or whichever is less. The changes are occurring in the river hydrology and leading to disastrous consequences like depletion of ground water levels,” the letter states. Laurenco also pointed out the destruction of breeding of fish in the river which is affecting livelihood of traditional fishermen.
