Drinking water flows about 35km to the city from Opa pipeline

GOA: Drinking water now flows about 35km to the city from Opa pipeline, not far away from the Chimbel lake a nearby source the Portuguese once used in the late 1950s for the first tap water system in Goa.

“As demand rises, and environmental pressure increases, large reservoirs will not be able to meet our demand. We need to think of local solutions from small and medium water bodies — both their conservation, improving recharge and better distribution systems,” B K Mishra, director, IIT Goa said.

IIT with its technological know how and GEC with its local expertise and student power in various departments will work with PWD to understand and improve design processes for small and medium-sized solutions.

Smaller sources require smaller treatment plants and purification is more manageable. “We will design a plant for Savoi Verem tapping these sources for local use. In such projects, the local colleges and community will have to help in designing these plants with IIT,” Sohoni said.
