GOA: The fresh spate of heavy rain has people living at the foot of the collapsed hillock at Vaddem, Vasco, worried. They fear the possibility of yet another landslide as big boulders are stuck midway on the slope which, they say, could roll down any time.
When contacted, Mormugao mamlatdar Saiesh Naik said, “My office has written to the South Goa collector on Friday informing that the PWD has not yet submitted a report and an estimate. Only once we receive this report will we have an idea of what work needs to be undertaken at the site and how much it will cost. The collector will then give administrative approval to the estimates.” Naik also told that he has submitted a report to the South Goa collector for compensation to the four houses that were damaged in the landslide.
Meanwhile, Shreejit Kavlekar, a resident of the landslide-prone area, said, “Till date, the only work the authorities have done is they’ve cleared the huge boulder from the house it crashed into. Forget about a long-term solution, they have made no efforts to even put temporary preventive measures in place.”
