GOA : Two and a half years after the state’s first full time commissioner for persons with disabilities tendered her resignation over the lack of basic facilities provided to make the office of the commissioner for persons with disabilities functional, those working in the field of disability rights have welcomed the cabinet’s decision to create seven posts for the office of the commissioner for persons with disabilities.
“We are happy that the cabinet has approved posts for the office of the state disability commissioner, and we hope they will be filled soon along with the post of a full-time state disability commissioner which is pending. The commissioner’s office needs to be well-equipped, said Raj Vaidya, president, Initiative for Disability Awareness, Rights and Empowerment (iDare). “But it will be crucial to ensure that efficient and deserving persons are appointed there on merit and not based on political manipulation. Secondly, it should be ensured that the work gets done efficiently,” he added.
