GOA: Despite stiff opposition, work on the expansion of the solid waste treatment facility at Saligao is expected to start soon. The state government has issued letter of award to M/s Hindustan waste treatment pvt ltd to increase the capacity of the facility from existing 100 tonnes per day to 250 tonnes per day. The total cost of the project is over Rs 100 crore.
“We are increasing the capacity of the plant for the same panchayats. What is happening is that during the peak tourist season, the plant receives a lot of waste and it gets accumulated at the plant. Our capacity is 100 tonnes per day but sometimes the plant receives around 200 tonnes of waste and that is the time we have problems. This is the time the work gets done in two shifts to clear the garbage,” Lobo said.
