GOA: Minister for waste management Michael Lobo has urged all owners of villas, apartments and other places which are rented out to tourists to get them registered with the tourism department in view of the rising number of illegal activities surfacing in the Calangute-Candolim tourism hub. A number of IPL betting rackets have been busted recently in the area, besides tourists being caught with fake currency, some of whom were staying in rented apartments. Seventeen persons wanted in a murder case in Tamil Nadu were also nabbed after they were found staying in apartments in Candolim.
“There are many properties which are not registered with the tourism department but are given on rent and are used by these people. It’s because of this that the government has asked owners of villas and apartments who rent them out to get registered. People need to also stop renting out apartments for short stays,” Lobo told reporters. At registered resorts and guesthouses guests have to provide proof of identity, etc, which is sometimes not the case with unregistered places, stakeholders said.
