Piligao locals see red over clearing of Murdi mangroves

GOA: Villagers of Piligao along with the local panch member caught a group of labourers felling a large number of trees in a mangrove forest at Murdi-Sarmanas on the bank of the Mandovi river.

Keri range forest officer Vivek Gaonkar said the department’s officials subsequently visited the area and are investigating the matter. “An offence has already been booked against those involved in felling trees at Murdi,” he said.

The issue was first brought to the notice of the Piligao sarpanch last October, following which the sarpanch, in a letter to the Keri range forest officer, urged that necessary action be taken against those involved in felling 900 mangroves in the area.
