State forest authorities to inspect 10 captive elephants

Goa: The high court of Bombay at Goa has directed state forest authorities to inspect 10 captive elephants at various spice plantations and resorts within two months after an animal welfare group raised apprehensions that the animals could be commercially used again.People For Animals Goa, in their petition, stated that 10 elephants continue to be in the custody of a spice plantation, spice farm and a resort in Ponda and Collem despite state forest authorities issuing orders for seizure of the elephants.

Advocate general Devidas Pangam agreed that seizure orders have been made by state forest authorities and pointed out that the resort, spice farm and spice plantation have been permitted to retain the custody of the elephants so that they are fed and maintained properly. He pointed out that they have no right to use the elephants for commercial purposes and stated that forest authorities have inspected their premises and found that the elephants were not being used for any commercial purposes.
