GOA: The tourism department on Monday issued an order granting 50% reduction in renewal fees for beach shacks and placement of deck beds to shack allottees for the current season 2020-21.The Shack Owners’ Welfare Society (SOWS), a body of beach shack owners, has been asked to convey the same to allottees. Cruz Cardozo, president of SOWS, said they are thankful to the government for reducing the licence fees as it would have been extremely difficult to tide over considering the crises they are facing due to Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the demarcation of beach shacks the process which the tourism department conducts to see that allottes do not occupy more space than allotted to them has been almost completed except for a few beach stretches in North Goa, said Cardozo.“Allottees have started setting up shacks. We hope to be ready to start business in the next 10 days,” he said.A beach shack has to be erected using eco-friendly material, and costs run into Rs 3 to 4 lakh. But in view of the pandemic, operators will likely keep it to a bare minimum. Most use pine wood and plywood and though the material is reused, some amount of degradation is expected due to wear and tear.
